چکیده

Legal reasoning is one of the most obvious application areas for computational models of argumentation as the exchange of arguments and counterarguments is the established means for making decisions in law. In this paper we employ Defeasible Logic Programming (DeLP) for representing legal cases and for giving decision-support, exemplary for private law. We give a formalization of legal provisions that can be used easily by judges for supporting their decision process and present a working system that resembles the decision-making in legal reasoning, in particular, with respect to the burden of proof. draft – 2010-06-30

Argument-based User Support Systems using Defeasible Logic Programming

Over the last few years, argumentation has been gaining increasing importance in several AI-related areas, mainly as a vehicle for facilitating rationally justifiable decision making when handling incomplete and potentially inconsistent information. In this setting, user support systems can rely on argumentation techniques to automatize reasoning and decision making in several situations such a...

Can Bobby demand delivery? Towards a knowledge-based system for private law

Whereas in all existing systems, legal reasoning is rule-based, over time legal rules have been amended by exceptions and counter-exceptions. Therefore, legal rules are not strict, but defeasible. We report on an approach of using Defeasible Logic Programming (DeLP) for the development of the LiZ system, a knowledge-based decision support system for private law. A knowledge base containing lega...

Recommender System Technologies based on Argumentation 1

In recent years there has been a wide-spread evolution of support tools that help users to accomplish a range of computer-mediated tasks. In this context, recommender systems have emerged as powerful user-support tools which provide assistance to users by facilitating access to relevant items. Nevertheless, recommender system technologies suffer from a number of limitations, mainly due to the l...

Defeasible Logic Graphs for Decision Support

Knowledge based systems provide decision support by applying a previously developed representation of knowledge for a particular domain. We describe a method for representing knowledge about any domain using defeasible logic graphs. Because these graphs are based on a defeasible logic of the sort described in [9], they can represent uncertain or incomplete knowledge. We reason about the represe...

Argumentation, Dialogue, and Decision Making 5.3 On Complexity of DeLP through Game Semantics On the Complexity of DeLP through Game Semantics

Defeasible Logic Programming (DeLP) is a general argumentation based system for knowledge representation and reasoning. Its proof theory is based on a dialectical analysis where arguments for and against a literal interact in order to determine whether this literal is believed by a reasoning agent. The semantics GS is a declarative trivalued game-based semantics for DeLP that is sound and compl...
